Okinawa Island
Island Japanese subtropical island with WWII history
Main island of the Ryukyus, Okinawa draws visitors for subtropical beaches, coral diving, Ryukyuan crafts and cuisine, American WWII sites, and island festivals.
Okinawa Island is the largest and most populous island of Okinawa Prefecture in southern Japan and forms the core of the Ryukyu Islands chain. The island is a regional administrative, cultural and transport hub with a subtropical climate and extensive coastal scenery.
Key attractions include the prefectural capital Naha, the historic Shuri Castle site associated with the Ryukyu Kingdom, and numerous beaches and marine areas popular for snorkeling and diving. The island also hosts several major U.S. military bases concentrated in different parts of the island.
Historically Okinawa was the centre of the independent Ryukyu Kingdom until its incorporation into Japan in the 19th century; Shuri Castle was the royal palace and administrative heart. In modern times Okinawa played a major role in World War II and subsequently developed as a tourism and strategic military location.
Okinawa Island lies in the East China Sea and is serviced by Naha Airport with ferry and air links to other Japanese islands and international destinations.
- Administrative and military importance: Okinawa Island is the largest island in Okinawa Prefecture and the population and transport hub for the Ryukyu Islands, with significant US military facilities present on the island.
- Climate and visitor season: The island combines subtropical beaches, coral reefs and sites linked to the former Ryukyu Kingdom; peak visitor months are spring through autumn for beach activities.
What to See #
- Naha: The prefectural capital and main transport hub on the southern coast, offering ferry and air connections, shopping and city services.
- Shuri Castle: The historic royal palace of the Ryukyu Kingdom that served as the administrative centre; the castle suffered a major fire in 2019 and reconstruction efforts have been underway.
- Cape Manzamo: A scenic coastal headland with a natural rock terrace popular for views and photography near the central west coast.
How to Get to Okinawa Island #
Okinawa Island’s international gateway is Naha Airport (OKA) in the south. Naha Airport is connected to central Naha by the Okinawa Urban Monorail (Yui Rail) - the airport has its own station and the monorail provides a quick ride into the city and to Kokusai-dori; taxis and rental cars are also widely used for island travel. Inter-island ferries and domestic flights connect Okinawa to other Ryukyu islands.
Tips for Visiting Okinawa Island #
- Aim for spring (March-May) or autumn (October-November) to avoid both the summer typhoon window and the peak summer holiday crowds; those months also give better visibility for coastal vistas.
- Base yourself in Naha for easy access to transport and then day-trip: use the Okinawa Monorail around central Naha but plan car-based excursions north and south - key headlands such as Cape Manzamo draw crowds around sunset, so go very early or later in the evening for photos.
- Book ferries in advance if you plan to visit Kerama or other nearby islands for snorkeling - popular sailings fill quickly during good-weather windows.
