Main image

Oisans is a mountainous subregion of the French Alps in Auvergne-Rhone-Alpes, centred on the Romanche valley and known for high alpine terrain and glaciated peaks. The area includes parts of the Écrins massif and classic Alpine resorts and villages.

The region supports major outdoor activities across seasons, including summer hiking and mountaineering in glaciated valleys and winter skiing at resorts such as Alpe d’Huez. High mountains and glaciers create pronounced vertical relief and technical climbing routes; the highest nearby summit in the Écrins massif is the Barre des des 4,102 metres.

Historically the area was part of the province of Dauphinin France and its valleys were shaped by repeated glaciations, leaving steep-sided valleys and cirques. Mountain agriculture and pastoral use have long coexisted with seasonal transhumance.

The Oisans region lies in the northern Dauphinne Alps of southeastern France, surrounding the Romanche valley and its access towns.

  • Alpe d'Huez climb: The Alpe d'Huez road climb is 13.8 kilometres long and is internationally famous for its 21 hairpin bends used in the Tour de France.
