The Massif des Écrins is a mountainous massif in the French Alps, located in Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes. Its highest point is the Barre des Écrins at 4,102 metres and the area forms the core of Écrins National Park.

The massif contains numerous peaks over 3,000 metres, extensive valley-to-summit glacier systems and long high-alpine ridges. It is a major destination for mountaineering, alpine climbing, glacier travel and multi-day hiking, with classic routes on peaks such as La Meije and glaciated approaches from the Glacier Blanc.

Alpine exploration and climbing in the Écrins intensified in the 19th century; the area later gained legal protection when Écrins National Park was created in 1973 to conserve its landscapes and biodiversity.

The range lies in southeastern France within the Dauphiné Alps; it is south of Grenoble and forms a prominent high-mountain area in the region, accessed from valleys and mountain towns on the park’s perimeter.

• Glacier Blanc: One of the massif’s principal glaciers, descending from high peaks and forming a well-known routehead for ascents and glacier travel.

The Parc national des Écrins is reached by road from Grenoble (south-east) or from Gap and Briançon. Vallouise and Pelvoux are common base villages; regular regional buses serve valley towns in summer. For alpine starts, local huts and guides organize access.

• Base in the valleys of Vallouise or Briançonnais for easy access to popular trails and refuges.
• If climbing Barre des Écrins (4,102 m), hire a certified alpine guide - the normal routes are glaciated and technical.
• Visit the Ailefroide area early in summer to see wildflowers and avoid the busiest days at the alpine huts.
