Ocmulgee Mounds National Historical Park preserves prehistoric Indigenous earthworks, artifacts, and cultural landscapes in Macon, Georgia, and was redesignated a National Historical Park in 2019 after decades of federal protection.
The site includes several large earthen mounds built by Mississippian-era societies, a reconstructed ceremonial earth lodge, a visitor center with archaeological exhibits, and trails that run along the Ocmulgee River. How to Get to Ocmulgee Mounds National Historical Park #
Ocmulgee Mounds National Historical Park is located in Macon, Georgia, a short drive southeast of downtown Macon. From downtown Macon it’s roughly a 10-15 minute (about 3-5 mile / 5-8 km) drive; follow local roads out of the city toward the Ocmulgee River park area and the site’s visitor parking. There is limited public transit directly to the park, so most visitors arrive by car.
