Stone Mountain is a large exposed granite dome and parkland feature located east of Atlanta, Georgia. The site combines a prominent natural monadnock with an extensive recreational state park.

The north face of the dome features a large carved memorial relief depicting three Confederate leaders, set into the rock face and visible from the park below. The exposed granite surface and surrounding trails make the mountain a focal point for hiking, summit access, and cable-car rides to lookout areas.

Over the 20th century the site developed into a public park with recreational attractions, trail networks, and interpretive facilities while remaining dominated by the rock outcrop and its carved face. Park management balances recreational use with preservation of the natural rock and surrounding woodlands.

Stone Mountain sits in DeKalb County about 16 miles east-northeast of downtown Atlanta, forming a prominent landmark within the suburban and metropolitan landscape.

Stone Mountain Park is best reached by car from Atlanta: the park lies east of downtown Atlanta, roughly 25-30 km (about 15-20 miles) away and is accessed via the Stone Mountain Freeway/US‑78 (connect from I‑285 east). Ample on‑site parking is provided at the park; follow the park signs for visitor parking and the main attractions.

There is no direct MARTA rail stop at the park, so visitors using public transit normally combine MARTA service into east Atlanta and then use regional shuttle/bus or a short taxi/rideshare for the final leg.

• Arrive at Stone Mountain Park early in the morning, before peak visitor buses and the laser-show crowds, and head straight to the Walk-Up Trail if you prefer a quieter ascent and to avoid the Skyride gondola queues.
• Start from the Memorial Hall/Walk-Up Trail parking area to access the summit trail; walking up gives uninterrupted views and lets you skip long tram lines while still getting to the top.
• If you want good photos of the carving with fewer people in frame, visit the shoreline viewpoints on the north side of the lake in the early morning; evenings and showtimes are much busier.
