Ober Gabelhorn Mountain

Ober Gabelhorn is a four-thousander in the Pennine Alps located in Valais, Switzerland, rising to 4,063 metres. It is classed among the alpine peaks that require technical climbing skills and alpine experience.

To reach Ober Gabelhorn you travel to Zermatt: take Swiss Federal Railways (SBB) or intercity trains to Visp, then the Matterhorn Gotthard Railway to Zermatt. Zermatt is car‑free-if driving, park in Täsch (about 5 km from Zermatt) and take the frequent Täsch-Zermatt shuttle train (roughly 12 minutes). From Zermatt village walk or take local mountain lifts/huts into the Zmutt/Trift valleys to the trailheads used for approaches to the mountain (trailheads are a few kilometres’ walk from the village depending on route).

• Approach the climb only with appropriate alpine experience or a certified mountain guide-the Ober Gabelhorn is a 4,000‑metre alpine peak involving glaciated approaches and exposed ridges.
• Aim for the core summer climbing season (July-September) and start very early in the day to reduce objective hazards (rockfall, afternoon storms) and increase chances of stable weather on the summit push.
