Nyköping Castle

Nyköping Castle (Nyköpingshus) is a medieval castle in the town of Nyköping in Södermanland County, Sweden, with origins in the 13th century. It served as a regional stronghold and royal residence during the Middle Ages.

The complex includes ruined defensive walls, a reconstructed keep and museum spaces that display archaeological finds and tell the castle’s story. Visitors commonly tour the vaulted cellars, walk the remains of the ramparts and view exhibitions about medieval life in the castle.

The castle dates back to the medieval period and was a royal fortress and administrative centre. A notorious event associated with the site is the 1317 Nyköping Banquet, when political prisoners were held in the castle cellars; the fortress later underwent repairs, expansions and periods of decline before parts were restored for public access.

The castle stands in central Nyköping above the Nyköpingsån river, within walking distance of the town centre and municipal facilities, roughly southwest of Stockholm.
