The area forms part of the Nyika Plateau conservation complex that was set aside to protect montane habitats straddling modern colonial-era borders; park management and visitor infrastructure have historically been concentrated on the Malawi side. The Zambian portion remains less developed and less-visited than the main Malawian national park.
