Nyika National Park, Zambia

A high-elevation protected area on the Nyika Plateau in northern Zambia, conserving montane grassland and upland wildlife as part of the larger Nyika conservation area that mostly lies in Malawi.

Set on rolling upland grasslands at roughly 2,000 meters above sea level, the landscape is dominated by open moor, seasonal wildflower displays and scattered patches of montane forest. Birdwatching, walking on plateaus and wildlife viewing for antelope species and raptors are the primary visitor activities.

The area forms part of the Nyika Plateau conservation complex that was set aside to protect montane habitats straddling modern colonial-era borders; park management and visitor infrastructure have historically been concentrated on the Malawi side. The Zambian portion remains less developed and less-visited than the main Malawian national park.

Located on the Nyika Plateau in northern Zambia along the Malawi border, the Zambian sector adjoins the larger Malawian park and is accessed mainly via routes from Malawi rather than from major Zambian cities.

• Climate: High-elevation climate makes temperatures cooler and wetter than surrounding lowlands, with frequent mist and afternoon showers during the wet season.
• Access: Most visitor facilities and road access are on the Malawi side of the plateau; cross-border travel routes are limited.
