Nyerere National Park
National Park Tanzania's vast wildlife reserve protecting large savannah ecosystems
Area of protected wilderness along the Rufiji in southern Tanzania, formerly part of the Selous; visitors come for big-game safaris, boat trips and birdwatching.
Nyerere National Park is the successor identity of the great Selous ecosystem in southern Tanzania: a mammoth sweep of miombo woodland, floodplains and the riverine corridors of the Rufiji River that has made and remade the fortunes of East African conservation. Renamed in 2019 to honour Julius Nyerere, Tanzania’s first president, the park contains one of the continent’s most extensive-and least visited-wildlife landscapes, where elephants, buffalo, lions and critically endangered wild dogs roam in numbers that astonish safari veterans.
Unlike the sight-and-snap conservancies of northern Tanzania, Nyerere’s scale favors a different safari grammar: boat safaris on the Rufiji reveal hippos and kingfishers along braided channels; long, patient drives through the miombo can produce solitary black rhino (in carefully managed zones) and nights where the horizon is a low, relentless chorus of barking hyenas. The region’s colonial-era hunting lodges once defined visiting; today it is a place where French, German and Tanzanian operators run small mobile camps, fly-in safaris and river cruises that trade crowds for remoteness.
Practicalities govern the mood: transfers from Dar es Salaam are long by road (several hours) unless one flies to charter airstrips like Siwandu or Mtemere; the best photographic light comes at the river at dawn and dusk, when the Rufiji’s mirror glass and drifting mist transform ordinary safari scenes into something cinematic.
How to Get to Nyerere National Park #
Access is typically by light aircraft from Dar es Salaam to park airstrips (Siwandu, Mtemere) operated by safari companies; alternatively arrange a 4x4 transfer from Dar es Salaam (road transfers can be long and depend on seasonal road conditions). Most visitors book packages through licensed tour operators that handle permits, transfers and guiding.
Tips for Visiting Nyerere National Park #
- If planning a photographic safari, book a light-air transfer to Siwandu or Mtemere airstrips to save long road travel.
- Combine a river-based boat safari on the Rufiji with game-drive days - the park's waterways reveal species that road safaris miss.
- Bring hard-cased luggage and insect protection; many operators impose weight limits on small aircraft.
Best Time to Visit Nyerere National Park #
The park is accessible year-round, but wildlife concentrations and accessibility vary with the seasons; most visitors travel during the dry months for predictable game viewing.
