Archaeological Site Former Swedish fortress near St. Petersburg, historic ruins
A 17th-century Swedish fortress at the mouth of the Neva, Nyenschantz marks early Russo-Swedish frontiers. Visitors come for ruined ramparts, riverside walks and proximity to St. Petersburg’s military and imperial history.
Nyenschantz (also Nyenskans) was a Swedish-built fortress located at the mouth of the Neva River near the site of present-day St. Petersburg. It was founded in 1611 and played a role in 17th-century Swedish-Russian competition for control of the eastern Baltic.
The place is primarily of historical interest; its former fortifications are now known from historical records and archaeological remains rather than extensive standing walls or a visitor centre. It attracts those interested in the early modern military history of the region.
Built by Swedish authorities to oversee trade and navigation on the Neva, the fortress was captured by Russian forces during Peter the Great’s campaigns in 1703 and lost its strategic role as St. Petersburg and other fortifications rose nearby. Over time the site ceased to function as an active defensive post.
Nyenschantz sat at the Neva river mouth in what is now the territory of the city of St. Petersburg, on the eastern approaches to the Gulf of Finland. Its location is part of the modern urban and riverine landscape of the city.
