Nusa Kambangan

Nusa Kambangan is an island off the southern coast of Central Java in Indonesia, best known for housing multiple high-security prison facilities. The island combines detention complexes with stretches of undeveloped coastline and tropical forest.

The island’s prisons have been in use since colonial and post-colonial periods, and the site has a long association with the Indonesian penal system. Several facilities are high security and the island is often described as Indonesia’s principal prison island.

Outside the secured compounds there are beaches, coastal scenery and forested interior areas, but public access is tightly controlled and visits are usually limited or supervised. Boat services to the island depart from Cilacap on the Javanese mainland.

Nusa Kambangan lies just off the southern coast of Central Java within Cilacap Regency, separated from the mainland by a narrow channel and visible from the coastal town of Cilacap.
