Gunung Galunggung Volcano

Gunung Galunggung is an active stratovolcano in West Java, Indonesia, rising to roughly 2,168 metres above sea level. It has produced several significant eruptions in the 20th century, the largest recent event occurring in 1982-1983, which caused large ash emissions and local evacuations.

The mountain features a prominent summit crater that contains a crater lake and steep inner walls; viewpoints and trails lead up to the crater rim, offering panoramic views over surrounding valleys. The volcano’s eruptions have periodically affected agriculture and regional air traffic due to ash clouds.

Galunggung’s activity has been monitored since the major 20th century eruptions and the area is part of Indonesia’s network of monitored volcanoes. Hiking routes and observation points are used during quiet periods, but activity status and official warnings should always be consulted before visiting.

The volcano is located in West Java province on the island of Java, Indonesia, within a landscape of volcanic highlands and agricultural valleys.

• Crater and viewpoints: A summit crater and crater lake occupy the volcano’s top; trails to viewpoints provide direct views into the crater rim area during stable conditions.

• Go in the dry season (roughly May-September) and plan an early-morning visit for the clearest crater views - low clouds build later in the day.
• Check Indonesia's volcanological agency (PVMBG) for current alert levels before travelling: Galunggung is an active volcano and access to the crater rim may be restricted when alert levels rise; respect exclusion zones and local signage.
• Use Tasikmalaya or Garut as your logistical base and hire a local guide if you plan to reach the crater rim or less-developed trails, both for navigation and up-to-date local access information.
