Nur Mountains
Mountains Coastal mountain range in southern Turkey, ancient Amanus

The Nur Mountains, historically known as the Amanus Mountains, are a north-south mountain range in southern Turkey in Hatay Province forming a natural barrier along the northeastern edge of the eastern Mediterranean. The range has rugged terrain and contains passes that have been strategically important through antiquity and the medieval period.
Historically the range marked the boundary region between Cilicia and inland Syria and appears in classical and Byzantine sources; it has seen varied control and use over centuries. The mountains are characterized by steep ridges and valleys draining toward the coastal plain and the inland plateaus.
Geographically the Nur Mountains run close to Turkey’s border with Syria in Hatay Province, forming part of the high ground above the Gulf of Iskenderun and surrounding lowlands.
