Novi Sad City
Area Serbian Danube city known for Petrovaradin Fortress
Serbia’s Danube city known for Petrovaradin Fortress, Austro-Hungarian architecture and a busy riverfront; Novi Sad draws festivalgoers, café culture and gallery visits.
Novi Sad is the second-largest city in Serbia and the administrative centre of the Autonomous Province of Vojvodina, situated on the Danube River. It served as a European Capital of Culture in 2022, raising its profile as a regional cultural centre.
The dominant visitor attraction is Petrovaradin Fortress, a large 17th-18th century Austrian-built fortification on the opposite bank of the Danube; its ramparts provide panoramic views of the city. The fortress is also the site of the annual EXIT music festival held in July. The city centre features Freedom Square (Trg Slobode) with civic buildings and the prominent Church of the Name of Mary, plus a riverside promenade and the Strand bathing area.
Novi Sad grew as a Habsburg-era commercial and military centre in the 18th and 19th centuries and contains substantial Austro-Hungarian and neoclassical architecture. Over the 20th and 21st centuries it developed cultural institutions such as the Serbian National Theatre and several museums.
Geographically the city sits on the left bank of the Danube in northern Serbia, roughly 80 km northwest of Belgrade and near the plains below the Fruška Gora range. The Petrovaradin Fortress occupies the opposite bank, connected to the city by bridges and local transport.

- Major annual event: The annual EXIT music festival takes place at Petrovaradin Fortress each July, drawing large international crowds to multiple stages across the fort complex.
