Notion (ancient city)

Notion is an ancient Greek city site on the Aegean coast in what is today İzmir Province, western Turkey, with visible remains from Archaic, Hellenistic and Roman periods. The site occupies a coastal promontory and contains city walls, public structures and harbour-related remains.

Surviving features include an acropolis with defensive works and an excavated theatre complex, which together illustrate the city’s role as a local coastal centre in antiquity. Archaeological work at the site has documented urban layouts and coastal installations tied to maritime activity.

Historically Notion was part of the network of Ionian and Anatolian coastal settlements and experienced successive Greek and Roman influence through classical antiquity. Over time the settlement declined and its remains became archaeological ruins studied by scholars and visited by people interested in ancient Aegean sites.

The site sits on the western shore of Turkey’s Aegean region on a coastal promontory within İzmir Province, accessible from nearby towns on the Karaburun peninsula and the Izmir metropolitan area.
