North Sentinel Island is a small, forested island in the Bay of Bengal that is part of India’s Andaman and Nicobar Islands. It is inhabited by the Sentinelese, an indigenous community known for maintaining strict isolation from outsiders.

The island has no tourist infrastructure and is effectively off-limits; Indian law and administrative practice prohibit approaching, landing or attempting contact in order to protect the Sentinelese and visitors. The community’s way of life and their intentional isolation are the defining characteristics of the island.

Little is publicly documented about the internal social structure or population size because external contact has been deliberately avoided and is illegal. As a result the island is managed under a strict exclusion policy to prevent disturbance and disease transmission.

North Sentinel Island lies west of the main Andaman group in the eastern Bay of Bengal and is administered as part of the Indian union territory of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, accessible only under exceptional governmental permission which is not granted for tourism.

  • Protected indigenous population: The island is inhabited by the Sentinelese, an indigenous people who maintain isolation and resist contact; Indian authorities enforce restrictions on approaching the island for safety and legal protection.
