Nisa, Turkmenistan

Nisa is the archaeological site of an early Parthian royal centre located in Ahal Region, near modern Ashgabat in Turkmenistan. It is associated with the Parthian dynasty and preserves large fortress walls and remains of a royal complex from the Hellenistic and Parthian eras.

The ruins include a fortified citadel, internal compounds interpreted as administrative and religious buildings, and evidence of large mudbrick constructions. The site is important for understanding Parthian architecture and state organisation and has yielded substantial pottery and sculptural fragments.

Nisa was founded and used during the Parthian period as a royal and administrative centre, serving the Arsacid dynasty from the Hellenistic era into late antiquity. Excavations in the 20th century documented its fortifications and building plans, which illustrate the blend of local and Hellenistic influences.

The site sits west of Ashgabat on the dry plains of the Ahal Region, set above surrounding agricultural land and visible from nearby roads that connect it to the Turkmen capital.
