Nicopolis ad Istrum is the ruins of a Roman and early Byzantine city in northern central Bulgaria, near Veliko Tarnovo, founded in the early 2nd century CE. The site preserves the remains of a planned Roman town with public buildings and defensive works.
Surviving features include the street grid and forum of the Roman urban plan, public and religious buildings such as basilicas, and sections of the defensive walls. The exposed foundations, columns and masonry give a clear impression of the town’s size and layout.
Founded by the Romans in the early 2nd century CE as a regional centre after military campaigns in the area, the city later continued into the Byzantine period before declining in the Middle Ages. Archaeological excavations over the 20th and 21st centuries have documented its urban fabric and changing use over time.
The ruins lie in Veliko Tarnovo Province in north-central Bulgaria, set in open countryside near small modern villages that provide access to the archaeological park.
