Nguru Mountains
Mountains Mountain range in Tanzania known for biodiversity
The Nguru Mountains, part of Tanzania’s Eastern Arc, offer montane forests, endemic birdlife and steep hiking routes. Researchers and trekkers come for biodiversity, waterfalls and views across Morogoro Region’s valleys.
The Nguru Mountains are a compact range in eastern Tanzania that form one element of the Eastern Arc Mountains, a region recognised for exceptionally high levels of endemic flora and fauna.
The range contains montane and submontane forest patches, steep ridges and valley systems that support endemic bird species, amphibians and forest plants; these forest blocks are the primary attractions for ecologists and birdwatchers. Accesses are limited and many forest areas are reached on foot from nearby villages or reserve access points.
The mountains are ancient crystalline uplands that have acted as ecological refuges over long geological timescales, producing high local endemism and making them conservation priorities within Tanzania.
Geographically the Nguru Mountains lie within Morogoro Region of eastern Tanzania, consisting of scattered forested blocks and ridges inland from the coastal plain and separated from other Eastern Arc ranges by lower-elevation terrain.
- Biodiversity hotspot: Part of the Eastern Arc Mountains biodiversity hotspot, notable for high levels of plant and bird endemism within isolated montane forest blocks.
- Visiting note: Best visited in the local dry season when trails are easier to negotiate and bird activity is more visible; interior access may require local guides and permits.
What to See #
- Nguru North Forest Reserve: A government-designated forest reserve covering one of the larger montane forest blocks in the range, protecting montane tree species and endemic birds.
- Nguru South Forest Reserve: A separate protected block that conserves remnant montane forest, important for endemic plants and small mammal populations.
