Nezu Shrine is a Shinto shrine in the Bunkyo ward of Tokyo, Japan, with a history and layout that reflect Edo-period origins. It is best known for its hillside azalea garden and a collection of historic shrine buildings.

The shrine complex includes a main hall and other auxiliary structures that date to the Edo period and are recognised for their cultural value. A sloping azalea garden on the shrine grounds contains many azalea varieties and is the focus of an annual spring festival when thousands of azaleas bloom.

Nezu Shrine was established in its present form during the early 18th century, and the site has been maintained as an urban shrine serving local worship and festivals. Its buildings and torii-lined pathways are characteristic elements of Shinto shrine architecture in Tokyo.

The shrine sits in Bunkyo Ward, northeast of central Tokyo, and is a short walk from Nezu Station on the Chiyoda subway line and within easy reach of Ueno and other central districts.

How to Get to Nezu Shrine #

Nezu Shrine (Nezu Jinja) is in Bunkyo, Tokyo, a very short walk from Nezu Station on the Tokyo Metro Chiyoda Line (about 1-2 minutes from the station exit). It is also within walking distance (roughly 15-20 minutes) from Ueno Station (JR lines and Tokyo Metro), so you can reach the shrine easily by taking the Chiyoda Line or any JR line to Ueno and walking south/west toward the shrine.

Tips for Visiting Nezu Shrine #

  • Arrive early in the morning to enjoy the shrine's torii-lined approaches and inner gardens before the Azalea Festival crowds build; mornings also offer the calmest conditions for photos.
  • Use Nezu Station on the Tokyo Metro Chiyoda Line (a short walk) as your primary access point to save time; the shrine is compact, so plan to combine it with a short walk around nearby Yanaka or Nezu neighborhoods.
  • If you can, visit during the Tsutsuji Matsuri (azalea season, typically late April-early May) on a weekday - the blooms are the draw, but weekends get very busy and congested.
