Park Multisite park commemorating Nez Perce history and culture
Nez Perce National Historical Park comprises sites across multiple states interpreting the Nez Perce (Nimiipuu) people’s history, traditional lands and the 1877 war. Visitors follow trails, visit village sites and learn through museums and tribal programs.
Nez Perce National Historical Park is a multi-site national park unit dedicated to the history, culture, and traditional lands of the Nez Perce (Nimiipuu) people. The park was authorized by Congress in 1965 to protect and interpret places important to Nez Perce history.
The park is managed as a dispersed series of units and affiliated sites located across the Nez Perce homeland. These sites include village locations, hunting and fishing places, travel routes, and locations associated with the 1877 Nez Perce War and subsequent events.
Management and interpretation are conducted in partnership with Nez Perce tribal members and local communities, and the park’s resources are spread across federal, state, tribal, and privately held lands. Interpretive services and visitor information are available at the park’s visitor contact facilities in Idaho.
Geographically the park’s sites are located across parts of Idaho and neighboring states in the interior Pacific Northwest, within landscapes of rivers, valleys, and plateaus that were traditional Nez Perce territory.

Tips for Visiting Nez Perce National Historical Park #
- Nez Perce National Historical Park is a non‑contiguous network of sites across Idaho, Oregon, Washington and Montana, so plan driving logistics and allow travel time between individual units rather than expecting a single campus visit.
- Start your visit by consulting the park's online map or calling the park office to pick the specific sites you want - many units are small roadside locations with interpretive panels and limited hours that are easy to miss.
- Early morning or weekdays reduce encounters with tour groups at popular sites (like battle and trail locations); visiting in shoulder seasons (spring or fall) also improves access and interpretive-program availability.
- Check for tribal‑led events and ranger programs in advance-those locally organized programs provide context you won't get from roadside signs and sometimes require separate scheduling.
