New National Theatre Tokyo
Opera House Major Tokyo performing arts center for opera and theatre
The New National Theatre Tokyo hosts opera, ballet and drama across multiple stages; audiences attend international and Japanese productions, orchestral performances and contemporary choreography.
The New National Theatre Tokyo is Japan’s national centre for performing arts, located in the Hatsudai district of Tokyo’s Shibuya ward. Opened in 1997, the facility was created to provide a dedicated home for opera, ballet, contemporary dance and theatrical productions.
The complex contains a large auditorium configured for full-scale opera and ballet, together with one or more smaller theatres and studio spaces that host drama, contemporary dance and experimental work. Programming includes domestic companies and visiting international productions.
Commissioned and opened in the late 20th century as a purpose-built national theatre, the complex consolidated multiple performing-arts activities under a single management and technical infrastructure. It has since been a focal point for large-scale performing-arts presentations in Tokyo.
The theatre sits in central Tokyo’s Hatsudai neighbourhood in Shibuya, within walking distance of local train stations and urban transit links, making it accessible by public transport.
