New Älvsborg

New Älvsborg (Nya Älvsborg) is a sea fortress situated at the mouth of the Göta älv in Västra Götaland County, historically built to protect the approaches to Gothenburg. It was constructed as a coastal defence installation and retains masonry fortifications and artillery emplacements.

The fortress comprises outer bastions and curtain walls facing seaward together with inner chambers and platforms for guns and supplies. Many of the surviving structures illustrate 17th- and 18th-century coastal fortification techniques.

The fort was erected in the early modern period as part of Sweden’s maritime defences and served in various roles guarding access to the river and port. It was maintained and updated in the centuries after its original construction to respond to evolving naval threats.

The site occupies a small island at the river mouth off the Gothenburg archipelago and is visible from the mainland; public access is typically by boat and most visitor activity occurs in the warmer months.
