Randstad / Western Lowlands (Amsterdam, Rotterdam, The Hague, Utrecht)

May brings long daylight and the city parks (Vondelpark, Kralingen) fill with picnickers as blossoms reach peak. Westerly breezes are gentler, and riverside cafés open fully - Liberation Day events on May 5 add local color. This is an excellent month for cycling between towns: expect light showers, so waterproof panniers and a breathable midlayer are handy.

Zeeland & Southwest Coast (Zeeland, Veerse Meer, Delta Works)

May brings long, pleasant days that are ideal for cycling the islands and touring the Zeeland coast; temperatures are reliably mild and outdoor seafood terraces open fully. Kite surfing picks up at Brouwersdam and sailing traffic increases in the Oosterschelde; reserve boat excursions on sunny weekends. Expect cool evenings and a breeze on the beach - a light fleece and waterproof shell will cover most situations.

Wadden Islands & North Coast (Texel, Vlieland, Terschelling, Ameland, Schiermonnikoog)

May brings pleasantly mild weather and the Wadden becomes a hotspot for bird migration watchers; Schiermonnikoog’s quiet beaches are especially attractive to walkers. Ferry services run more frequently and island trails are in good condition for cycling and hiking. Pack a mix of short-sleeved and warm layers, a windproof jacket for exposed ridges, and reserve any seal- or bird-watching cruises ahead of weekends.

Northern Provinces (Friesland, Groningen, Drenthe - Leeuwarden, Groningen city, Sneek)

May is reliably pleasant with emerging greenery and calmer weather that suits sailing and lakeside recreation around Sneek and the Frisian Lakes. The boating season is in full swing, and small harbours buzz with activity - book moorings and rentals ahead if you want to join in. Nights remain cool, so pack a warmer layer for evening canal-side meals and be ready for sudden showers.

Eastern Provinces & Veluwe (Gelderland, Overijssel - Arnhem, Apeldoorn, Deventer, Hoge Veluwe)

May provides warm, comfortable weather and reliable daylight for cycling the Veluwe paths and exploring open-air museums like the Liemers; wildflowers and birdlife peak. Canoeing on the IJssel or boating in smaller rivers suits most days, but be aware of sudden showers in the late afternoon. Pack breathable layers and waterproofs for longer hikes - bugs and ticks become more active by late May.

Southern Limburg (Maastricht, Valkenburg, Heerlen - the hilly south)

May provides reliably pleasant weather for cycling the winding Limburg hills and visiting vineyard terraces: vineyards around Maastricht enjoy warmer microclimates. Outdoor terraces and castle gardens are comfortable, and walkers benefit from long daylight. Bring a light daypack, sun protection and a windproof layer for ridge-top paths - expect occasional rain even on otherwise warm days.
