Neduntheevu, also known as Delft Island, is an island in the Jaffna District of Sri Lanka’s Northern Province. It is notable locally for its distinct cultural and natural features among the isles in the Palk Strait.
The island’s highlights include scattered colonial-era ruins, limestone and coral rock formations, and a well-known large baobab tree. Small groups of feral horses are often seen around coastal plains and village edges and are a frequent subject for visitors and photographers.
The island was known as Delft during European colonial periods and shows layered influences from Portuguese, Dutch and later administrations in its place names and some surviving structures. Local communities on the island have traditionally fished and engaged in small-scale agriculture.
Neduntheevu sits off the Jaffna Peninsula in northern Sri Lanka, in the Palk Strait. The island is part of the Jaffna administrative area and is reached by boat services from the peninsula’s coastal towns.
