Nauru in November: Weather, Crowds & What to Expect

Yaren and West Coast (Aiwo, Denigomodu)

The northwest monsoon becomes established by November, and Western Nauru moves into the wetter half of the year with frequent heavy showers and rougher seas. Travel plans that depend on calm water - fishing trips, reef snorkels - are more likely to be postponed; road puddles appear quickly after downpours. Even so, town life carries on; bring a sturdy rain jacket, waterproof bags and patience, as services continue but with more interruptions.

Central Phosphate Plateau (rocky interior)

When November’s wetter phase arrives, storms drench the phosphate fields, washing gullies and increasing runoff into coastal areas. The plateau is slick in places and fine dust turns into mud that clings to footwear; many people avoid extended interior walks during this period. Bring waterproof footwear, a protective outer layer and accept that some interior viewpoints may be inaccessible after heavy rain.

Anibare Bay and Southeast Coast (Meneng, Anibare)

By November the bay regularly experiences heavier rain and higher surf, reducing clarity for snorkeling and sometimes bringing debris into the inlet from runoff. Fishing and boat outings become more weather-dependent, and beach days are interspersed with long, wet spells. Waterproof cover for luggage and flexibility in plans are important; bring mosquito protection as standing water increases.

Northern Villages and Anabar Lagoon (Anabar, Ijuw, Nibok)

November’s monsoon influence firmly returns, and the northern villages experience frequent showers and higher winds at times that stir the lagoon. Small boats are more cautious and some inland tracks become waterlogged; local life continues but visitors should be ready for interruptions to plans. Bring robust rainwear, waterproof cases and be prepared to delay coastal excursions if conditions worsen.
