Yaren and West Coast (Aiwo, Denigomodu)
Late-summer humidity lingers into February and storms can arrive as short, intense bursts; Yaren and Aiwo see drenching squalls that often clear the air but can disrupt short trips to the western reef for snorkeling. Roads around Denigomodu may get greasy where surface drainage is poor, so bring shoes with grip if you plan to walk town-to-town. Boat charters to the reef are possible between squalls but check the skipper’s plan - service is sporadic when seas pick up.
Central Phosphate Plateau (rocky interior)
February maintains oppressive heat on the plateau, and when rain falls it tends to be sudden and torrential, briefly reducing dust and lifting a salt tang off the ground. The rough, calcrete surface can turn slippery where rain washes loose material, so walking off the main paths is discouraged. Bring a hat, strong sunscreen and plenty of water; the central interior is unforgiving in midday and offers limited shelter during squalls.
Anibare Bay and Southeast Coast (Meneng, Anibare)
February commonly stays wet and humid at Anibare, with the risk of rough seas curtailing boat-based fishing trips and making long beach swims inadvisable. The reef still supports life close to shore, but visibility drops after rain, and currents can feel stronger. Small local villages like Meneng keep to their routines regardless; pack waterproofs and plan activities for mornings unless you want to sit out squalls.
Northern Villages and Anabar Lagoon (Anabar, Ijuw, Nibok)
February continues with a high chance of rain in the north, where the windward exposure means showers can be more frequent than on the sheltered west coast. Anabar’s small communities maintain day-to-day life despite the weather, but boat trips from the north are frequently put off during squalls. Lightweight rain gear, a dry bag for electronics, and patience will make exploration of local paths manageable.
