Natural and Culturo-Historical Region of Kotor
Historical Site Historic Kotor region with fortified towns and fjord-like bay
Kotor’s UNESCO-listed region combines a medieval coastal town, Venetian-era walls and a fjord-like bay; tourists come for fortified alleys, seaside promenades, boat trips and the panoramic hike up to San Giovanni fortress.
The Natural and Culturo-Historical Region of Kotor is a UNESCO World Heritage site on Montenegro’s Adriatic coast, centered on the medieval town of Kotor and its fortified landscape. The property was inscribed in 1979 for its combination of natural setting and cultural architecture.
The medieval Old Town with Romanesque and Venetian-era churches and palaces, extensive ramparts and stairways that climb to the San Giovanni fortress roughly 260 metres above the town, and nearby Baroque settlements such as Perast with its islets. The fjord-like Bay of Kotor gives the region a dramatic mountain-and-water setting and supports yachting, small-boat visits and coastal sightseeing.
The site reflects centuries of Venetian and later Mediterranean influence in urban design and fortification building, with coastal towns developed between the Middle Ages and the early modern period. Conservation and restoration efforts have focused on preserving the stone architecture and historic defensive works.
The region sits along the inner reaches of the Bay of Kotor on Montenegro’s southwestern Adriatic coast, with principal settlements Kotor, Perast and Herceg Novi located around the bay. The combined cultural landscape is closely linked to the steep karst mountains that rise immediately from the coastline.
- Best viewpoint: The fortification walls climb steeply from the town to the mountaintop fortress and provide panoramic views of the bay - reach the San Giovanni trail for the best overview.
- Visitor note: The inscription covers the coastal townscape and surrounding fortified landscape; some sections are steep and involve many steps, so allow time and wear sturdy shoes.
