Natuna Besar

Natuna Besar, often called Great Natuna Island, is the largest island in the Natuna archipelago and is part of Indonesia’s Riau Islands province. It functions as the administrative and population centre of the Natuna Regency and is the main island of the island group.

The island’s geography includes coastal plains, beaches and offshore coral formations; local settlements concentrate around sheltered bays and the main town of Ranai. Maritime transport and fishing are important elements of the local economy and connectivity.

Administratively the island is governed as part of Riau Islands province and hosts regional infrastructure such as the main airfield and port facilities that connect Natuna to other Indonesian islands. The island’s remote location in the southern South China/Natuna Sea contributes to its strategic and logistical profile.

Natuna Besar lies in the northern reaches of Indonesia’s maritime territory, within the Natuna Sea region and several hundred kilometres from Indonesia’s major western islands.
