The National Museum in Prague is the Czech Republic’s principal museum institution, housed in a neo-Renaissance landmark building at the top of Wenceslas Square. The museum institution dates to the early 19th century and the present building was completed in the late 19th century.
Permanent displays cover natural history, archaeology and Czech history alongside temporary exhibitions; visitors also note the building’s ornate central staircase and the large domed roof. The restored roof and dome area provide elevated views over Wenceslas Square and the city centre.
Founded as a national cultural institution in the 19th century, the museum’s current building was designed by Josef Schulz and inaugurated at the end of the 1800s. It underwent an extensive conservation and modernization programme that returned the main building to public use in 2018.
The museum stands at the upper end of Wenceslas Square in Prague’s New Town, within the central Prague 1 district and close to major tram and metro connections.
