The Musée National de Préhistoire is France’s national museum dedicated to human prehistory, located in Les Eyzies-de-Tayac in the Dordogne department. It concentrates on Paleolithic archaeology and the human story in the Vézère valley.

• Visit early in the day outside peak summer months to avoid busier coach groups that arrive later; mornings are also cooler for reading outdoor interpretive panels along the Vézère valley.
• Park in Les Eyzies and approach on foot through the village rather than trying to drive right to the museum entrance-parking near the museum is limited during high season.
• Allow time to see the museum's outdoor archaeological gardens and terrace overlooks-these context exhibits are often skipped by visitors who rush the indoor halls.
• If you're coming in July-August, check the museum website and reserve tickets in advance when possible, as admissions and guided-tour slots can fill up.
