National Mosque of Malaysia

The National Mosque of Malaysia (Masjid Negara) is the national mosque of Malaysia located in Kuala Lumpur and was completed in 1965. It serves as a principal place of worship and a symbol of the newly independent nation.

The complex features a large umbrella-like roof with a 16-pointed star design over the main prayer hall and an open-air courtyard and reflecting pools. The site accommodates approximately 15,000 worshippers and includes separate ablution areas and gender-segregated prayer spaces.

Construction was finished in 1965 as a post-independence national project; it has served continuously as a major state mosque since opening and has undergone maintenance and refurbishment works over the decades. The building and grounds reflect modernist mosque architecture from the mid-20th century.

The mosque sits on a landscaped site near the city center of Kuala Lumpur, within walking distance of other central landmarks and public transport. It is in a built-up urban area rather than a rural setting.
