Sri Maha Mariamman Temple in Kuala Lumpur is a historic Hindu temple in the city centre, known as the oldest Hindu house of worship in the capital. It was established in the 19th century and retains an active congregation.

The temple is notable for its ornate multi-tiered gopuram tower above the entrance and richly carved figures painted in bright colours. Devotees come for daily puja, festive processions and traditional South Indian rites; the temple is also a popular landmark for visitors to Chinatown and central Kuala Lumpur.

Founded by early Tamil settlers in 1873, the temple has been maintained and expanded by successive generations of the local Hindu community. It has hosted annual festivals and rites that continue to be central to its religious life.

The temple stands on Jalan Tun H S Lee near Kuala Lumpur’s Chinatown and Petaling Street, within walking distance of Merdeka Square and other central city attractions.

From KL Sentral or Pasar Seni: the temple is a short walk from Pasar Seni LRT station (Putra Line) or from Merdeka Square area. It sits on the edge of Chinatown (Petaling Street), easy to reach on foot from central Kuala Lumpur hotels and markets.

• Dress respectfully - it is an active place of worship, not a tourist theatre.
• Arrive before major Hindu festivals (Thaipusam, Deepavali) if wanting to witness colourful celebrations, but expect crowds.
• Photography inside may be restricted during ceremonies - ask permission for posed shots.
