How to Get to Nansana
Nansana is a large suburban municipality immediately northwest of Kampala. Most visitors arrive via Entebbe International Airport (EBB) and continue by shuttle, matatu or taxi into Kampala and then to Nansana; there is no dependable passenger rail service for this route.
Entebbe International Airport (EBB): Entebbe is the main international gateway for Kampala and the surrounding suburbs (including Nansana). From the airport you can take a prepaid airport taxi directly to Nansana (typical cost about UGX 80,000-120,000; journey 35-60 minutes depending on traffic), a shared airport shuttle/minibus into Kampala (about UGX 10,000-20,000 to Kampala city centre; 45-70 minutes) and then a short matatu or taxi on to Nansana (an additional 15-30 minutes). Ride‑hailing services (Bolt for cars and SafeBoda for motorbikes) operate in Kampala and can be booked from the airport area when drivers are available - fares vary with demand but expect roughly UGX 40,000-90,000 for a car to central Kampala and similar travel times.
Train: Uganda does not currently have a reliable, regular passenger rail service serving Kampala or its immediate suburbs; scheduled passenger trains are limited and not a practical way to reach Nansana. For most travellers, surface transport is faster and more reliable.
Bus / Minibus (Matatu): Regular minibuses and shared taxis (commonly called matatus) run between Kampala’s main taxi/bus hubs and the suburbs. From Kampala city terminals (Kampala Central Taxi Park and other busy stops) you can catch a matatu to Nansana; fares are typically in the UGX 1,000-3,000 range and the trip takes about 20-40 minutes depending on traffic. Intercity coaches and private airport shuttles also link Entebbe and Kampala (UGX 10,000-25,000 to the city) - change to a local matatu or taxi for the last stretch into Nansana.
How to Get Around Nansana
Nansana is best navigated using the informal public network: matatus for the cheapest trips, boda‑bodas or SafeBoda for quick short hops, and Bolt or private taxis for comfort or airport transfers. Walking is fine for short local errands, but expect crowded vehicles and variable pavement conditions - plan extra time for peak traffic.
- Matatu / Shared minibus (1,000-3,000 UGX) - The cheapest way to get around - frequent services connect Kampala and nearby suburbs like Nansana. Expect to board at informal stops or taxi parks (e.g. Kampala Central) and pay about UGX 1,000-3,000 for short suburban trips. Matatus are often crowded and stop on request; keep small change and watch your belongings.
- Private taxi (10,000-120,000 UGX) - Taxis (including airport prepaid taxis) are the most comfortable direct option, useful with luggage or late at night. Fares are negotiated or fixed at the airport - roughly UGX 10,000-40,000 for short in-city trips and UGX 80,000-120,000 from Entebbe to Nansana. Confirm the price before you start the journey.
- Ride‑hailing (Bolt, SafeBoda) (4,000-40,000 UGX) - Bolt operates car bookings in Kampala and SafeBoda offers app-based motorcycle taxis; both make travel easier by letting you see fares and driver details. Typical inner‑city fares run from a few thousand shillings to around UGX 40,000 depending on distance and time of day; surge pricing can increase costs. SafeBoda is useful for short hops through traffic - look for drivers with clear app ratings.
- Boda‑boda (motorcycle taxi) (2,000-8,000 UGX) - Fast for short trips and weaving through Kampala's traffic, boda‑bodas are everywhere. Short rides in the suburbs commonly cost UGX 2,000-8,000; negotiate or use SafeBoda to book a vetted rider and get a quoted fare. Helmets are often available but insist on one and avoid long rides on busy highways.
- Intercity coach / Airport shuttle (10,000-25,000 UGX) - Scheduled coaches and private shuttles run between Entebbe, Kampala and other towns; they are a reliable option for the longer leg from the airport to the city. Expect UGX 10,000-25,000 to reach Kampala city centre from Entebbe (45-70 minutes), then switch to a local matatu or taxi for the final 15-30 minutes to Nansana. Book reputable operators for luggage and set pickup points.
- Walking - Nansana is walkable for short distances within neighbourhoods and markets, but pavements can be uneven and motor traffic close by. Use walking for last‑mile errands and short local hops during daylight; carry water and be cautious crossing busy roads.
