The M’zab Valley is an oasis region in Ghardaïa Province, Algeria, composed of a cluster of fortified towns established by the Ibadi Mozabite community; it is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The valley is noted for its distinctive earthen and stone architecture adapted to an arid environment.
The valley comprises five principal fortified settlements - a pentapolis - that feature compact, stepped house blocks, narrow streets, central mosques and markets. Visitors encounter whitewashed buildings, date‑palm oases, traditional souks and an urban layout designed for communal social organization and defensibility.
The towns were founded by the Mozabites in the 11th century as a series of purpose-built settlements that adapted over centuries to local climate and social needs. Many original urban and architectural features survive because of continuous occupation and conservative building practices.
The M’zab sits in the northern Sahara within Ghardaïa Province along the Wadi M’zab corridor; the terrain is arid valley and palm grove between sand plains and rocky plateaus.
- UNESCO listing: Designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1982 for its unique desert urban planning and well-preserved traditional settlements.
- Visitor conduct: Some towns maintain conservative local rules and limited visitor access; follow local guidance and respect dress codes and photography restrictions.
What to See #
