Mustique
Island Private Caribbean island known for celebrity retreats
Small private island in the Grenadines known for exclusive villas, calm beaches and yachting. Visitors arrive by charter for beach swimming, fishing and a compact social scene centered on a few bars and restaurants.
Mustique is a privately owned island in the Grenadines, part of Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, developed as an exclusive retreat after its purchase in 1958 by Colin Tennant.
The island is known for its private villas, a small boutique hotel, a handful of public beaches and a compact island community with limited shops and services. Key visitor points include a public beach, a small commercial hotel, social venues such as Basil’s Bar and a short-runway airstrip used by charter flights.
Development in the late 1950s and 1960s transformed the island into a low-density private resort favoured by artists, businesspeople and other high-profile visitors; infrastructure has been kept intentionally modest to preserve privacy and landscape.
Mustique lies in the Grenadines chain of the Caribbean and is part of the state of Saint Vincent and the Grenadines; the nearest national capital is Kingstown on St Vincent.
- Access and ownership: The island is privately owned and operated as an exclusive resort community; most accommodation is in privately owned villas and stays are usually by invitation or advance booking.
- Transport: Served by private and charter flights from St Vincent and nearby islands, with limited facilities for independent visitors.
What to See #
- Macaroni Bay (Macaroni Beach): A sheltered white-sand beach that is one of the island's few publicly accessible shores and a main attraction for day visitors.
- The Cotton House: A small commercial hotel that provides accommodation, dining and local events on the island.
- Mustique Airport: A short-runway airstrip used by private and charter flights connecting the island with St Vincent and other Grenadines islands.
- Basil's Bar: A well-known waterfront bar and social hub popular with island residents and guests.
How to Get to Mustique #
Mustique is reached by air or sea. Most visitors fly to a regional hub (for example St. Vincent or Barbados) and then take a scheduled inter‑island flight into Mustique Airport; private yachts also commonly visit the island from nearby Grenadine islands.
On arrival transfers are by island vehicles or arranged transport - the island is small and distances are short.
Tips for Visiting Mustique #
- Mustique is a privately owned island with very limited accommodation and transport capacity-book accommodation and any inter‑island transfers well in advance through official operators or your travel agent.
- Respect that many parts of the island are private properties and staggered quiet hours are enforced; ask your host or the Mustique Company about which beaches and roads are open to visitors and when.
- Plan visits around the island's small schedule of services: bring any essential reservations (restaurants, transfers, excursions) before you arrive because walk‑in options and taxi availability are limited.
Best Time to Visit Mustique #
Best to visit Mustique in the dry season (December-April) for sunny, calm weather and the most reliable conditions for beaches and boating.
