Musée des monuments français
Museum Museum of French architectural monuments and plaster casts
The Musée des Monuments Français historically collected plaster casts and architectural models of French monuments; parts of its collections are displayed within the Cité de l’Architecture et du Patrimoine at the Palais de Chaillot.
The Musée des Monuments français was a Paris museum founded in 1795 by Alexandre Lenoir to preserve and display architectural fragments and funerary monuments from across France. It operated during the Revolutionary and Napoleonic periods before its closure in the early 19th century.
The museum assembled and exhibited sculptural monuments, epitaphs and architectural fragments salvaged from churches, chateaux and tombs, presented to illustrate French medieval and Renaissance heritage. Displays were arranged as gallery reconstructions of monuments and funerary art.
Established by Alexandre Lenoir in 1795 as a protective response to widespread Revolutionary destruction, the museum collected and conserved pieces removed from threatened sites. It was closed and its collections dispersed after the Restoration in the 1810s, with many objects transferred to the Louvre and other institutions.
The museum was located in Paris; its assembled collections and many of the conserved objects were subsequently integrated into other national museums and sites in the city.
- Purpose: Founded and run in the wake of the French Revolution as an effort to preserve architectural and funerary monuments that were threatened with destruction.
