Murchison Falls National Park is a large protected area in northwestern Uganda centered on the stretch of the Victoria Nile that plunges through a narrow gorge to form Murchison Falls. The park contains savannah, riverine woodland and forested areas and is notable for its concentration of large mammals and birds.
The park’s highlight is the point where the Nile is squeezed through a gap roughly 7 meters wide and drops about 43 meters, creating a powerful waterfall and white-water channel. Game drives, boat safaris and birding excursions are the main visitor activities, with sightings commonly including elephants, buffalo, giraffe, lions, hippos and Nile crocodiles, plus waterbirds and the occasional shoebill.
Murchison Falls National Park was established in the mid-20th century and has been managed for wildlife conservation and tourism while supporting local communities. Park infrastructure includes roads, viewpoints, and boat-launch sites concentrated near Paraa.
The park lies in northwestern Uganda along the Victoria Nile between Lake Kyoga and Lake Albert, roughly 300 kilometers by road from Kampala, with the town of Masindi and the Paraa area serving as common access points.

What to See #
- Murchison Falls: Murchison Falls - where the Victoria Nile is forced through a narrow gap about 7 meters wide and plunges roughly 43 meters, forming the park's signature waterfall.

How to Get to Murchison Falls National Park #
Murchison Falls National Park is reached by road from Kampala or by scheduled/charter domestic flights to airstrips near the park. By road, expect a drive northwest from Kampala of roughly 300-350 km to the Paraa/Murchison area (about 5-6 hours depending on route and traffic). Masindi is the nearest sizable town to the park (Masindi is roughly 60-70 km south of the Paraa area) and is a common staging point.
There are also domestic flights to Pakuba or Chobe airstrips close to the park from the Entebbe/Kampala area; within the park many visitors use the launch/boat service from Paraa to reach the base of the falls and lodges typically arrange transfers.
Tips for Visiting Murchison Falls National Park #
- Schedule a morning game drive in the northern Kaniyo Pabidi and central habitats to avoid mid‑day heat and to increase chances of seeing primates and active wildlife; afternoon boat safaris toward the falls are better for spotting hippos and crocodiles.
- Take both perspectives of the waterfall: a short hike to the Top of the Falls viewpoint for the narrow, powerful chute and a separate boat trip from the Paraa landing to view the falls from the river-many visitors do only one and miss the contrast.
- Base yourself at Paraa or nearby lodges when possible: Paraa is the park's main hub with boat departures and guided options, and using it reduces long transfer times to popular activities.
