Munții Cindrel is a mountain group in central Romania, located in Sibiu County and forming part of the Southern Carpathians (the Transylvanian Alps).

The range is characterized by rounded peaks, alpine pastures and extensive forest cover, and it hosts traditional shepherding landscapes and rural mountain villages. Trails and forestry tracks provide access for walkers and seasonal pastoral activity continues across the slopes.

The mountains have long been used for grazing, timber and local transport; the human presence is primarily rural with a cultural landscape shaped by pastoralism rather than dense settlement. Infrastructure is limited to mountain roads, footpaths and small settlements.

The Cindrel group lies southwest of the city of Sibiu in central Romania, forming part of the highland interior of Transylvania and connecting to neighboring Carpathian massifs.

• Elevation and environment: Contains summits and ridges that exceed 2,000 metres and support montane pastures and mixed beech-conifer forests.

Munții Cindrel are southwest of Sibiu city in Sibiu County. Access is by local county roads from Sibiu toward the Turnu, Sălişte and Răşinari areas. Many trailheads are reachable by car with short hikes into the ridges; local guesthouses and shepherds’ huts offer trail advice.

• If exploring from Sibiu, take local roads toward the Turnu and Sălişte valleys; small parking spots mark trailheads.
• Bring a topographic map - many trails are traditional shepherd tracks rather than formal national-park routes.
• Look for sheepfolds (stâni) and simple pastoral architecture on lower slopes - they reveal the Cindrel's human geography.
