Mundo Perdido (the Lost World) is a major ceremonial complex within Tikal National Park, northern Guatemala, notable for large pyramids and plazas and for being among the site’s earliest ceremonial centers. It played a central religious role in Tikal’s urban layout from the Preclassic into the Classic Maya periods.
Construction at Mundo Perdido began in the Preclassic period and continued through the Classic era, with successive building phases adding platforms, temples and façades. Mid-20th century archaeological projects documented, excavated and conserved many structures, revealing the complex’s early origins and long use for public ritual.
The complex sits within the southern portion of the Tikal core in the Petén region of northern Guatemala, set amid lowland tropical forest and connected to the rest of the site by ancient stone causeways and modern park trails.

How to Get to Mundo Perdido, Tikal #
Mundo Perdido is inside Tikal National Park, Petén Department. Most visitors arrive via Flores (Santa Elena) airport-regular flights from Guatemala City-then take a 1-1.5 hour shuttle or bus to Tikal. From the park entrance, Mundo Perdido is a short walk northwest of the central plazas; follow official park trails and signage. The park road is unpaved in places; guided tours from Flores include transportation and gate admission.

- Arrive at dawn for the sunrise over Temple IV-the light through the ceiba and canopy is unforgettable and far quieter than midday.
