Island Estonian Baltic island with traditional villages
Off Estonia’s west coast, Muhu island offers rural villages, sandy beaches and low-lying reed shores. Travelers cycle quiet lanes, explore small chapels and sample local farmhouse crafts and seafood.
Muhu is an island in the Baltic Sea within Estonia’s Saare County, situated in the Gulf of Riga. It is one of Estonia’s inhabited islands and forms part of the Saaremaa municipal area.
The island is known for well-preserved traditional villages, manor houses and coastal landscapes including beaches and reed-fringed bays. Rural cultural heritage, craft traditions and seasonal tourism are important local features.
Historically Muhu has been inhabited for millennia and retains vernacular architecture and farming patterns; today it is accessible by ferry from the mainland and by road across a causeway linking it to the larger island of Saaremaa.
Geographically it lies between the Estonian mainland and Saaremaa in the western Baltic region and is administered from Saare County.
- Connections and access: The island is connected to neighbouring Saaremaa by a short causeway and is served from the Estonian mainland by a ferry at Kuivastu.
What to See #
- Koguva village: A preserved traditional village on the island known for vernacular architecture and cultural heritage, often cited as an example of Muhu rural life.
- Pädaste Manor: A restored manor and estate offering period architecture and landscaped grounds that form a notable local landmark and hospitality venue.
- Muhu Museum: A small local museum located near the island's administrative centre that presents Muhu's rural history, folk culture and maritime connections.
How to Get to Muhu #
Muhu Island (Muhu/Kuivastu) is reached by ferry from the Estonian mainland: regular car and passenger ferries operate between Virtsu (mainland) and Kuivastu (Muhu). Virtsu is reached from Tallinn by road (E67), a drive of roughly 2-2.5 hours depending on traffic (about 150 km).
Once on Muhu you can drive across the island; a causeway (Väinatamm) links Muhu to neighbouring Saaremaa so visitors often combine crossings by ferry and road. Local bus services connect Kuivastu harbor with island villages.
Tips for Visiting Muhu #
- Plan arrival via the Virtsu-Kuivastu ferry (Kuivastu is the island's main port) and allow time to cross the island by road-most island services and attractions are concentrated near Liiva and Koguva.
