About Muckish

Muckish is a prominent flat-topped mountain in north County Donegal, Ireland, with a summit around 666 metres above sea level. Its distinctive plateau and quartzite composition make it a local landmark.

Hikers follow steep routes to a broad, flat summit that provides expansive views over the surrounding Derryveagh Mountains and out toward the Atlantic coast when visibility is good. Remains of past quarrying activity are visible on the mountain’s slopes and add industrial-era interest to walks.

The mountain’s quartzite was quarried in the past and spoil and infrastructure from that activity remain on its slopes. Over time Muckish has become a popular local hiking objective because of its shape and accessible ridges.

Muckish sits in north County Donegal as part of the Derryveagh range in Ulster. It is approached from nearby mountain roads and local trailheads in the surrounding countryside.

Drive from Dungloe or Letterkenny to the Muckish trailhead (minor roads lead to parking near the base). Well-marked paths lead from the parking area; expect a 1-3 hour ascent depending on route and fitness.
