Mshatta is the site of an 8th-century Umayyad desert palace known for its monumental carved stone façade and ornamental sculpture. The site is recognised for its architectural and decorative programme as an early Islamic palace complex.
The most famous element associated with Mshatta is the carved façade panels with vegetal motifs, geometric patterns and animal figures; those panels are conserved and on display in the Pergamon Museum in Berlin. The original site in Jordan retains the ruined foundations and architectural remains that mark the palace’s layout.
The palace was built in the Umayyad period as a desert palace or fortified residence; portions of the complex were never finished and the structure fell into disuse and ruin. Large sections of the decorated stone façade were removed in the modern period for conservation and museum display outside Jordan.
The site lies in the eastern part of the modern Amman Governorate in Jordan, in the desert belt east of Amman. The archaeological remains are located away from dense settlement and are accessed from regional roads leading out of the capital.

- Combine a short visit here with nearby Amman sites (it's southeast of the city) to make the trip efficient; check opening hours ahead because access can be limited outside normal museum/site times.
