Mount Yudono
Mountain Sacred Dewa Sanzan mountain with a Shinto shrine
One of Yamagata’s Dewa Sanzan, Yudono attracts pilgrims to its Shinto shrine and visitors to nearby hot‑spring towns and forested trails.
Mount Yudono is one of the Three Mountains of Dewa (Dewa Sanzan) in Yamagata Prefecture, Japan, and is a sacred mountain in Shinto and Shugendo practice with an elevation of about 1,504 meters.
The summit area contains the Yudonosan Shrine, a pilgrimage shrine where visitors perform religious rites; the mountain is a key destination on the Dewa Sanzan pilgrimage route and is noted for its religious significance rather than commercial tourism. Photography inside the shrine area is traditionally prohibited and visitors are expected to follow shrine rules.
The mountain has been a centre of mountain worship and ascetic practice for centuries, and the shrine and pilgrimage routes have been maintained by local religious communities over time.
Mount Yudono lies in Yamagata Prefecture in northern Japan as part of the Dewa Sanzan group, inland from the Sea of Japan.
