Mount Yudono is one of the Three Mountains of Dewa (Dewa Sanzan) in Yamagata Prefecture, Japan, and is a sacred mountain in Shinto and Shugendo practice with an elevation of about 1,504 meters.

The summit area contains the Yudonosan Shrine, a pilgrimage shrine where visitors perform religious rites; the mountain is a key destination on the Dewa Sanzan pilgrimage route and is noted for its religious significance rather than commercial tourism. Photography inside the shrine area is traditionally prohibited and visitors are expected to follow shrine rules.

The mountain has been a centre of mountain worship and ascetic practice for centuries, and the shrine and pilgrimage routes have been maintained by local religious communities over time.

Mount Yudono lies in Yamagata Prefecture in northern Japan as part of the Dewa Sanzan group, inland from the Sea of Japan.

  • Photography: Photography of the inner shrine at the summit is traditionally forbidden and visitors are asked to respect this practice.
  • Seasonality: The summit shrine and immediate area are subject to seasonal access restrictions, with shrine buildings closed to the public during winter months.
