Mount Uhud is a low rocky mountain just north of the city of Medina in present-day Saudi Arabia, known primarily as the site of the Battle of Uhud in 625 CE. The site is a significant place in early Islamic history and memory.

At the foot of the mountain visitors find the cemetery of those who fell in the battle and several marked graves that are focal points for pilgrims and visitors. The slopes and surrounding area are modest in elevation and are visited for their historical associations rather than for mountaineering.

The Battle of Uhud took place in 625 CE between the early Muslim community of Medina and forces from Mecca; the engagement and its aftermath are recorded in early Islamic sources and have shaped the site’s significance. Several individuals regarded as martyrs are traditionally buried at the site.

Mount Uhud lies just outside the historic centre of Medina, north of the city. It is easily reached from Medina and is frequently included on visits focused on early Islamic history.

  • Martyrs' cemetery: A cemetery at the mountain's base contains the graves of many who fell in the Battle of Uhud, including the noted companion Hamza ibn Abdul-Muttalib.
  • Religious significance: The site is an important early Islamic historic location and is visited for its religious and historical associations rather than for alpine recreation.
