Mount Tsukuba
Mountain Double-peaked mountain near Tokyo known for shrine
Famous for its twin peaks and Shinto shrine, Mount Tsukuba in Ibaraki provides short hikes, a cable car and views over the Kanto plain.
Mount Tsukuba is a well-known mountain in Ibaraki Prefecture noted for its twin peaks and cultural shrine. The mountain’s two summits are close together and provide multiple short routes for hikers of varying ability.
Many visitors combine a shrine visit with a hike or use the cable car and ropeway to access higher viewpoints without a long ascent. Clear days afford distant views toward the Kanto plain, and the mountain is a popular destination for autumn colours and sunrise outings.
The site has a long cultural association with the shrine on its slopes and has been used for both religious visits and recreational hiking for generations.
The mountain lies near the city of Tsukuba and is reachable as a short trip from larger urban centres in the Kanto region.
- Twin peaks: Characterised by its twin peaks and relatively low elevation, it is accessible to casual hikers and widely visited for seasonal foliage and sunrise views.
- Day-trip friendly: Shorter trails and mechanical lifts make it suitable for family outings and half-day visits from nearby urban centres.
What to See #
- Nyotai and Nantai peaks: The twin summit configuration with two named peaks separated by a short ridge, each offering distinct viewpoints and short connecting trails.
- Tsukubasan Shrine: A Shinto shrine with a long cultural history that sits on the mountain and is the traditional spiritual focus for ascent and festivals.
- Cable car and ropeway: A cable car and ropeway that provide quick uphill transit from the base to higher-elevation viewpoints, popular with non-hikers and sightseers.

Tips for Visiting Mount Tsukuba #
- Use the Tsukubasan Cable Car or Ropeway to save time and reach the summits quickly - starting from the ropeway stations makes it easy to walk between the twin peaks (Nyotai and Nantai) and visit Tsukubasan Shrine without a long approach.
- Plan visits for clear winter or early-morning days if your goal is a Fuji view; on hazy days the plain can be obscured, so check weather and aim for sunrise or late afternoon light.
- Don't miss the shrine and the short ridge walk between the two peaks - many visitors ride up and back without doing the inter-peak walk, which offers the best 360° views across the Kanto plain.
