West of Tokyo, Mount Tanzawa provides day‑hike trails, ridgelines and seasonal beech and maple woods popular with weekend hikers from the metropolitan area.
Mount Tanzawa (丹沢山) is a mountain in Kanagawa Prefecture and a central summit of the Tanzawa range, noted for its alpine ridge terrain and established hiking routes. Its summit elevation is 1567 metres.
Hikers follow ridge trails and multi-day routes that link to nearby peaks in the Tanzawa range; clear days offer long-distance views including Mount Fuji. Routes vary from steep single-day ascents to longer traverses that require overnight stays at mountain huts.
The peak is a natural mountain long used for recreation; it is part of the Tanzawa-Oyama Quasi-National Park and has long-standing trail infrastructure rather than a single historic construction. Mountain huts and marked trails have developed to support recreational use.
