Mount Song
Mountain One of China's Five Great Mountains, Shaolin nearby
Mount Song near Dengfeng hosts the Shaolin Temple and multiple Daoist and Buddhist monasteries; visitors come for Kung Fu demonstrations, cliffside monasteries and historic hiking paths.
Mount Song (Songshan) is a major mountain massif in central Henan province and is traditionally ranked among China’s Five Great Mountains; its highest summit, Shaoshi Peak, rises to about 1,512 metres. The area is a long-established religious centre with Buddhist and Daoist sites concentrated on its slopes.
The mountain is best known for the nearby Shaolin Temple and its martial arts associations, the adjacent Pagoda Forest cemetery with over 200 funerary stupas, and multiple monastery complexes and trail routes that together make it a significant pilgrimage and cultural-heritage destination. Hikers can follow established paths to ridgelines and summits, and several cable-car services operate on the more developed tourist routes.
Religious establishments on the mountain date back many centuries. The Shaolin Temple traces its foundation to the 5th century; the Songyue Pagoda is dated to 523 AD. The cluster of historic temples, monasteries and observatories around Dengfeng, including structures on Mount Song, was recognised by UNESCO for its cultural value in the early 21st century.
The massif sits in Dengfeng county, Henan province, with temple complexes spread across its lower slopes and summit ridges. The terrain is a mix of steep rock faces, wooded valleys and developed temple precincts that dominate the cultural landscape.
- UNESCO: Forms part of the UNESCO World Heritage listing 'Historic Monuments of Dengfeng' (inscribed for the religious and astronomical complexes around the mountain).
- Best time and conditions: Late spring and early autumn offer the most comfortable hiking conditions and clearer views; many routes include steep stone steps and short exposed sections.

- Shaoshi Peak: The mountain's highest point reaches 1,512 metres and is commonly referred to as Shaoshi Peak; it is accessible by trails and by a cable car service on some routes.
- Songyue Temple and Pagoda: An early Buddhist temple complex whose central stone pagoda dates to 523 AD and is part of the broader historic monuments on the mountain.
- Zhongyue Temple: An important Daoist complex on the mountain with large courtyards and historic halls that predate some later reconstructions.
