Mount Sneffels is a 14,150-foot (4,315-meter) peak in Colorado’s San Juan Mountains and is a well-known fourteener. It forms the high point of the Sneffels Range and is a popular mountaineering and hiking objective in southwestern Colorado.

The mountain presents classic alpine ridges and steep faces; common approaches include routes that start from nearby alpine basins and require route-finding over talus and rock. Its prominence and shape make it a frequent subject for photographers and climbers.

First ascents and regular climbing activity date from the late 19th and early 20th centuries as the San Juan range was explored and mapped. Recreational use expanded in the 20th century with improved access by road to nearby trailheads.

Located near the towns of Ouray and Ridgway in southwestern Colorado, Mount Sneffels rises above the Uncompahgre and San Miguel valleys and is visible from sections of U.S. Highway 550.

How to Get to Mount Sneffels #

Most parties stage from Ouray or Ridgway. The usual trailhead is in Yankee Boy Basin (about 6 miles south of Ouray on County Road 5), with a steep trail gaining the basin; the standard ascent starts from the Yankee Boy Basin parking area and climbs via established but often loose routes.
