Mount Sipylus, also known as Spil Mountain, is a prominent mountain near the city of Manisa in western Turkey. The mountain is notable for natural rock formations and archaeological associations that date back to classical antiquity.
A well-known feature on the mountain is a rock formation associated with the Niobe legend, often called the Weeping Niobe, and there are archaeological remains of ancient settlements at its base. The mountain and surrounding slopes have been part of local cultural landscapes for millennia and feature historical sites alongside natural scenery.
Geographically it rises directly above the Gediz Plain near Manisa in Manisa Province, forming a backdrop to the city and providing panoramic views over the surrounding agricultural lowlands.

How to Get to Mount Sipylus #
Mount Sipylus (Spil Dağı) rises immediately north of the city of Manisa in western Turkey and is also reachable from nearby İzmir. By car it’s a short drive from Manisa city centre to Spil National Park (on local roads; drive time from Manisa ≈15-30 minutes). From İzmir the drive to the foothills is roughly 35-45 km east depending on route.
There are parking and trailheads at the park; once at the park entrance you proceed on foot along marked trails to reach the archaeological sites and summit viewpoints.
Tips for Visiting Mount Sipylus #
- Visit in spring or autumn to avoid the intense summer heat and to enjoy clearer views across the valley from the slopes of Spil (Mount Sipylus).
- Approach the park from Manisa and use the main entrance roads into Spil Dağı National Park to reach the marked car parks and short walking paths that lead to the primary viewpoints and geological features.
- Take time to walk to the named rock features (Ağlayan Kaya/Weeping Rock and other myth-linked sites) in the park rather than only viewing from the road-these short side-paths are often overlooked by bus tour visitors.
